In Raimund Verspohl’s portrait photography people don’t show up in the pose. They show up in the in-between. The moment they forget what they’re supposed to look like. That’s where we find gazes that aren’t trying to please anyone. Hands that aren’t performing a gesture. Time doesn’t stand still here — it just leans back for a moment, tired of the daily spectacle.
The people in these portraits are therefore not figures in a staged world. They are travelers in the moment. Caught between what they’re supposed to show and what they actually are.
His images consequently radiate a natural ease. Unhurried, yet with a precise sense of direction — for business portraits as well as fine art. A continuous engagement with what it means to truly be seen. A look behind the surface, into those rare moments when we’re simply allowed to be ourselves.
The camera isn’t polite. It doesn’t ask for your good side. Instead, it holds onto what remains when the curtain falls. A smile that sells nothing. A look that doesn’t try to convince — it just tells. Closeness, distance. Being lost. Weakness. Strength. All of it at once and coherent, as in the GRAUTON series .for example.
Raimund gained his first professional experience at the Theater im Pumpenhaus in Münster from 1987 to 1988, after which he worked as a computer graphic designer and lecturer in animation in Munich. A permanent position in an advertising agency was followed by freelance work as a graphic designer in 1992. From 1996 to 1997, he also lived and worked in Jakarta, Indonesia. After his return, he began to devote himself to portrait photography as well as design.
His path therefore led him from graphic design to portrait photography. From the observation of outer forms to the exploration of inner worlds. In short: the search for authenticity — for what lies behind the visible self.
Raimund himself doesn’t enjoy being in front of the camera. That’s precisely why he understands how it feels. His encounters come without expectations. Prejudices are fine, as long as you’re willing to keep questioning them.
Raimund Verspohl was born near Münster in 1962 and grew up in a rural environment. After graduating from high school, he studied communication and graphic design at Münster University of Applied Sciences from 1981 to 1987.
His ability to listen and ask the right questions enables him to capture genuine, unpredictable moments.
Raimund’s portrait photography is ultimately also an ongoing self-reflection. It continually asks what it means to truly be seen. A look behind the masks — into the moments when we let them drop. Get in touch when you’re ready.
