Photo credits, copyright, picture credits or author credits – whatever you call it. Photo credits honor photographers and protect their rights. The correct indication of names and a visible placement are an expression of fairness and professionalism!

The § 13 Recognition of authorship of the Copyright Act makes it clear that authors, i.e. photographers, have the right to have their name mentioned in the reproduction and distribution of their works. They can determine whether and how their name should appear in the wording, for example:

The right to photo credits remains independent of the scope of sold or assigned rights of use. Unfortunately, there are often misunderstandings here. For example, when my name was not mentioned in a press release, someone said that the paid photo did not require credits – see above.

You can find more on this topic in my post on LinkedIn: Image rights. Ignorance, ignorance and gray areas .

Photo credits – More than a question of principle

Imagine your product is shown on a shopping site, but your name is missing. Stupid, right? Photo credits are essential for photographers – jobs often arise when someone sees a photo and wants to have their portrait taken by the photographer in question.
